Q: How much does the RS-1000 TEEN BLACK BOX™ cost?
A:
The manufacturers suggested retail price for the RS-1000 TEEN BLACK BOX™ is $295.00 US plus shipping, handling, insurance and sales tax where applicable. It includes the RS-1000 TEEN BLACK BOX™, Processor/Memory Card, Data Link Connector Cable, USB Download Cable, Base Station Software, Manual, Quick Start Guide and Informational DVD for Parents and Teens..
Q: What is the primary benefit of the RS-1000 TEEN BLACK BOX™ for teen drivers?
A:
The RS-1000 reduces the likelihood of a vehicle crash and creates a safer driving environment for younger inexperienced drivers. It does this by encouraging the elimination of unsafe and aggressive driving behaviors and increasing the driver’s awareness while behind the wheel.
Q: How does the RS-1000 improve a teenager's driving habits?
A:
Any time an unsafe driving condition is detected by the RS-1000, an immediate audible warning is given to the driver. Unsafe conditions include high speed driving, hard cornering, aggressive “pedal-to-the-metal” acceleration, hard braking, street racing, etc. With this immediate audio feedback, the driver is reminded to stop the unsafe condition at the moment it is happening, the same as if you were in the car sitting next to them. This type of conditioning changes aggressive unsafe driving behavior into conservative safe driving behavior. You can verify that the system is working by reviewing the easy to read reports and graphs, and can quickly identify areas where your teen driver needs improvement.
Q: Is there a similar device available from any other company?
A:
Although event data recorder type “crash boxes” will record the conditions of the vehicle during a vehicle collision, for over a decade Road Safety International has been providing professional fleets with a system to prevent the crash from happening in the first place. Our real time audible feedback and advanced reporting features significantly reduce the likelihood of a vehicle crash rather than simply reporting the crash after the fact.
Q: What are the disadvantages of the RS-1000?
A:
For some parents, ignorance is bliss. The potential for tragedy, high insurance costs and parental liability when teens drive unsafely may not be enough of a motivation for certain parents. Do you really want to know that your teenager is driving unsafely or worse, doing dangerous activities such as road racing? Also, teens trained in safe driving behaviors using the RS-1000 TEEN BLACK BOX™ will notice the unsafe driving behaviors of parents and others. The RS-1000 is only for those parents and families that want to prevent vehicle crashes and minimize costs associated with aggressive, unsafe driving habits.
Q: What about monitoring drivers of all ages?
A:
Although teen drivers represent the highest-risk drivers on the road, the benefits of safe driving extend far beyond the teen driver to drivers of all ages. The ideal situation is that everyone in the family will drive safely, and the RS-1000 can be an ideal tool to train family members of all ages in safe driving techniques and behaviors.
Q: OPERATION AND INSTALLATION
Can the RS-1000 TEEN BLACK BOX™ be installed in any vehicle?
A:
The RS-1000 can be installed in virtually any car or light truck. For 1996 or newer vehicles, the RS-1000 is easily user-installed by simply plugging it into your vehicle’s Data Link Connector (DLC). Full documentation and instructions are supplied. For 1995 and older vehicles, the unit requires hard wire connections to the vehicle that must be performed by a qualified automotive technician.
Q: Where is the RS-1000 installed in the vehicle?
A:
The RS-1000 can be permanently installed in a vehicle by screw attachment or temporarily installed with industrial Velcro® strips (included in the kit). The RS-1000 can be mounted to any relatively level area inside the vehicle, preferably out of the way under the driver or passenger seat.
Q: Can the RS-1000 be transferred from one vehicle to another?
A:
Yes. The software installed on your home PC will need to have vehicle settings entered for each vehicle the RS-1000 will be monitoring.
Q: Is the RS-1000 capable of handling a small fleet of ten vehicles?
A:
Yes. However, depending on the application, the RS-2000 for Commercial Fleets may be the desired product.
Q: DATA
How many days of driving data will the RS-1000 record?
A:
The RS-1000 will store over a month's worth of data in most cases. When the data is downloaded to your home PC and saved to a permanent file, the RS-1000 will clear its memory and be prepared to start collecting data again. If the data card’s memory is exceeded (i.e., over a month has passed without downloading the data to your home PC), the system overwrites the oldest data first, while retaining the most current data in memory.
Q: How do I get data from the vehicle to my home PC?
A:

First, slide open the door on the front of the RS-1000 TEEN BLACK BOX™ and push the button that releases the processor/memory card. After removing the card, use the supplied USB cable to connect the processor/memory card to your home PC loaded with the Base Station software. Finally, view the reports and graphs using the advanced data analysis software.

RS-1000 System

If someone removes the processor/memory card to prevent the collection of data, a report is generated the next time you download data that indicates the date, time, and odometer reading when the memory card was removed, alerting you to a potential tamper of the system.

Q: How much time does it take to manage the data?
A:

Depending on the amount of data collected, most downloads take less than a minute. Quick downloading of vehicle data brings the information directly to your home PC, enabling a parent to produce detailed reports and graphs, all with the click of a mouse button.

Q: What are the home PC requirements to run the RS-1000 software?
A:
The RS-1000’s Base Station software operates on any IBM compatible PC running Windows XP/2000/Me/98SE. System requirements include Pentium II 233Mhz PC or above, 64MB RAM, 30MB free hard drive space, SVGA monitor or higher, CD-ROM drive, and USB Port 1.1 or higher.
Q: Is the RS-1000 software MAC compatible?
A:
No.
Q: Does the RS-1000 TEEN BLACK BOX™ preserve data in the event of a power loss?
A:
Yes. While the RS-1000 is in the vehicle, it is powered through either the DLC connector or hard wired connections, depending on the type of installation. When the processor/memory card is connected to your home PC, it is powered by the USB connector on your computer. In the event of a power loss, the data is protected with an internal lithium backup battery.
Q: Can reports be printed?
A:
Yes.
Q: How is data displayed?
A:
In addition to written exception reports, the RS-1000 Base Station software provides driver performance data in a graphical display. The advanced Road Safety™ software allows you to overlay multiple vehicle operating parameters on the same graph.
Q: FEATURES
Can the RS-1000 record the odometer reading?
A:
Yes.
Q: Does the RS-1000 report ignition start/stop, and idle occurrences, and the length of each occurrence?
A:
Yes.
Q: Is there an option that monitors tailgating?
A:
Although the RS-1000 TEEN BLACK BOX™ does not specifically measure following distance, it does report actions that indicate a propensity for “tailgating” behaviors. Indicators include a significant number of hard braking occurrences and a high percentage of brake applications over short driving distances.
Q: Does the RS-1000 monitor interior vehicle sounds?
A:
Yes. The RS-1000 measures sound level inside the vehicle so it can maintain the appropriate volume level for the audio warning system. If your teen driver turns up the radio volume or drives with the windows open, the RS-1000 raises or lowers the warning tones so the driver will still be able to hear the audio warnings. The volume level (in db’s) is also reported in the graphical display of drive data. THE RS-1000 DOES NOT RECORD CONVERSATIONS.
Q: Can a parent set the speed and other parameters, as well as disable all tones?
A:
Yes. All safety parameters are user definable and tones can be turned on or off through the Base Station software setup screen.
Q: How does the RS-1000 know who is driving?
A:
The RS-1000 date and time stamps all data, enabling a parent to identify time frames when a teenager was driving a specific vehicle.
Q: DRIVER REACTION
What do teenagers think about the RS-1000 TEEN BLACK BOX™?
A:
Nobody likes "big brother (Mother or Father) watching." Parents may initially observe some resistance to this new technology. When they make it clear that safe vehicle operation is required and teen drivers start to see the benefits of the RS-1000, concerns quickly disappear.
Q: Can my teenager tamper with the RS-1000?
A:
Yes, they can unplug the RS-1000 and/or remove the processor/memory card. However, the system records all such tampers and reports the date, time, and odometer reading when the tamper occurred the next time data is downloaded. Also, the Base Station software is password protected to prevent anyone other than the parent from downloading, viewing or modifying the data that has already been collected.

Q: Are insurance companies aware of the RS-1000 TEEN BLACK BOX™, and do they offer discounts to teen drivers with the device installed in their cars?
A:

Yes, many insurance companies are aware of the significant benefits of the RS-1000. As for rates and discount programs, these vary widely among different insurance carriers. Ask your specific carrier if having the RS-1000 TEEN BLACK BOX™ installed in your teen’s vehicle will help lower their rates.

To insurance companies, rates are based in a large part on historical performance of each specific driver and driver type, and teens are considered a high-risk group. Since many insurance companies offer “Good Student” discounts, the correlation can also be made for installation and use of the RS-1000 in the teen’s vehicle.

For insurance purposes, the real benefit will come from the reduced likelihood of vehicle crashes and moving violations. Whenever a teen driver is involved in a collision or gets a ticket, the insurance premiums can increase significantly and, in some cases become prohibitive. The real benefit will come from safe driver discounts as the teen driver reduces aggressive driving behaviors that contribute to vehicle collisions in the first place, thus maintaining and ultimately lowering the rates paid.
