1996 and Newer Vehicles

The RS-1000 TEEN BLACK BOX™ is installed by simply plugging the supplied cable into the OBD-II Data Link Connector.  The Data Link Connector (DLC) is factory installed on all 1996 and newer vehicles sold in the United States and Canada.  The connector is generally located under the dash near the steering wheel.  To determine the location of the DLC connector in your vehicle, please CLICK HERE.

The RS-1000 includes everything you need to install the system in your 1996 or newer vehicle, however some vehicles do not fully implement the signals necessary for the RS-1000 to function properly.  This may be the result of a faulty vehicle system or sensor, or a non-compliant vehicle OBD-II protocol.  Please check the list below to see if you have a known non-compliant vehicle before you purchase the RS-1000:

1.   Electric Vehicles - Hybrid Vehicles

These vehicles generally are not supported and may not implement OBD-II protocols.

2.   1997 Ford Explorer, Ranger & Mazda Vehicles

Some 1997 Ford Explorers and Rangers with Mazda 4.0L engines and 1997 Mazdas with 4.0L engines do not report vehicle speed in the OBD-II protocol.  The RS-1000 will show all data and run information normally but will not display speed information in the graphs or reports.

3.   1996 Mercedes Benz "C" Class

Plugging any device into the OBD-II Data Link Connector may cause the vehicle to enter the diagnostic mode and illuminate the "Check Engine" light.

4.   2003 Dodge Quad Cab

Some 2003 Dodge Quad Cab models do not report vehicle speed in the OBD-II protocol. The RS-1000 will show all data and run information normally but will not display speed information in the graphs or reports.

5.   2004 Dodge Intrepid

Some 2004 Dodge Intrepid models do not report vehicle speed in the OBD-II protocol. The RS-1000 will show all data and run information normally but will not display speed information in the graphs or reports.

6.   2004-2005 Volkswagen Jetta

Some 2004-2005 mid-year Jetta models do not report vehicle speed in the OBD-II protocol. The RS-1000 will show all data and run information normally but will not display speed information in the graphs or reports.

1995 and Older Vehicles

For 1995 and older vehicles without an OBD-II diagnostic connector, you will need to order the RS-1011 Vehicle Direct Connect Wiring Harness (see above). In this case the RS-1000 will need to be "hard-wired" to the vehicle using the RS-1011 harness. Installations of this type must be performed by a qualified automotive technician and, as a result, can be quite expensive..

Road Safety™ does not provide technical support, documentation or answer any technical questions for "hard-wire" installations. The only documentation provided with the "hard-wire" harness is the function and color of each wire in the harness.  It is up to the qualified automotive technician to determine the proper vehicle installation and connection point for each wire.  Road Safety™ assumes no responsibility for incorrect "hard-wire" installations.  For additional information regarding non-OBD-II compatibility, please call Road Safety™ at 805-498-9444.

Vehicles Manufactured for Sale Outside of the United States and Canada

Vehicles manufactured for sale outside of the United States and Canada may or may not have a compatible DLC connector. The RS-1000 may or may not work with these vehicles.  Please verify that your vehicle is compatible with the OBD-II standard. We do not provide refunds on units purchased for shipment outside of the United States.  Alternatively, the RS-1000 can be “hard-wired” to the vehicle using the optional RS-1011 Vehicle Direct Connect Harness.  This installation should only be performed by a qualified automotive technician and can be both expensive and time consuming.  Road Safety™ does not provide technical support for hard-wire installations.
