Teen Drivers -- What's a Parent to Do? |
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety tells us that teen drivers are more than four times as likely to be involved in vehicle crashes as compared to adult drivers. Sixteen year olds are at the highest risk.
Today there is something
you can do to reduce the risk to your teen driver
while they gain experience. It's a device called the RS-1000 TEEN BLACK BOX . The following are some concerns you will face as the parent of a teen driver and how our RS-1000 TEEN BLACK BOX addresses those concerns:
SPEEDING
In serious vehicle crashes involving teen drivers, excessive speed is almost always
a factor. Our ambulance and fire department first
responders continuously tell us about the tragic and needless loss of life that occurs due to excessive speed.
For most parents, one of their biggest fears is
the telephone call or the knock on the door late
at night by a police officer telling them their teenager will not be coming home. The RS-1000 constantly monitors vehicle speed and sounds an audible alarm when the driver exceeds a preset speed limit. An in-vehicle audible speed warning absolutely
changes behavior and stops this tremendously unsafe
driving practice.
AGGRESSIVE DRIVING
Hard braking usually indicates driver distractions
causing late reactions or driving too fast for
the road or conditions. "Jack-rabbit" takeoffs
from a stoplight and high speed cornering are aggressive
behaviors commonly found in teenage drivers. This
type of driving significantly increases the risk
of a vehicle crash. Add to that the feeling of
invincibility that most teenagers have along with the
attitude that "it won't happen to me" and you
have a recipe for disaster. The RS-1000 uses an accelerometer, similar to those used in automotive testing, to measure vehicle G-forces that are created by this type of aggressive driving. As G-forces become excessive, an audible warning
is immediately given to the driver to back-off.
The only way to avoid hearing the audible warning
and the embarrassment (when friends are in the vehicle)
is to drive safely.
HOW AND WHEN
The RS-1000 tells you how and when
your teen was driving on a second by second basis.
If you say "I don't want you speeding on the freeway"
and they do anyway, you will know it. If curfew
is at 12:00 AM and they get home at 1:00 AM, you
will know it. As frequently as you like, simply
pop the processor/memory card out of the RS-1000 TEEN BLACK BOX and
plug it into your family computer to display the
reports and graphs. Review them with your teenager
and let them know that you care how they operate
the vehicle - no speeding, no aggressive driving
- just like being in the car with them every second
they drive. For all of us, driving a car is a
privilege -- it is not a right. This system lets
your teenager know that they can continue to enjoy
that privilege as long as they drive safely.
I know what many of you are going to say -- "my
son or daughter is a good kid -- honor student,
athlete, goes to church, hangs with the right
kids, etc. etc. I know they drive safely when
I am not with them." Think again. We have collected
thousands of hours of base-line data covering
thousands of miles of teenage driving. Trust me
when I say that you would be shocked to see how
fast and how aggressive teenagers drive when
you are not in the car with them. If you knew,
you would take the keys to the car and throw them
away forever.
